Miami Herald: Thank Miami-Dade’s legislators for supporting tax reform

Americans across the country agree modernizing our federal tax code with a pro-growth, pro-business agenda is of utmost importance. It has been 30 years since the code was last updated. The United States has higher tax rates than any other nation in the world, and everyday jobs for hardworking Americans are siphoned off to countries with friendlier business climates.

Thanks to the hard work of U.S. Reps. Carlos Curbelo, Mario Diaz-Balart, and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the president and Congress are ready and willing to overhaul the tax code. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to push for reform, and I am proud our elected officials are embracing such a task.

Tax reform will help ensure today’s hardworking young adults have the opportunity to find high-paying jobs, invest in our nation and even start a business of their own. A fair and modern tax code means businesses would once again compete globally, and other companies could invest in our nation. By trimming the code and eliminating unfair loopholes, the United States will reinvigorate our economy and return the our country to a position of global power.

In a state where small businesses make up 98 percent of the economy, Floridians, especially, will benefit from tax reform. Small business owners will see their rates reduced, and families across the state will experience increased income. In fact, estimates show the average Floridian’s median household income will increase by $4,248 if reform is enacted.

It is promising to see our representatives demonstrating their commitment to tax reform. I encourage all Miami residents to thank Curbelo, Diaz-Balart and Ros-Lehtinen for their support and encourage continuing the momentum to pass tax reform.

Nelson Diaz, chairman,

Miami-Dade Republican

Executive Committee,

Miami
