Business Groups Support Solar Energy Primary Election Ballot Amendment

Tallahassee, Fla., April 5, 2016 – Florida business groups applaud Senator Brandes, Representative Rodrigues and Berman for leading the effort to enhance solar development in Florida. This amendment will allow voters to decide whether businesses should get the same tax fairness as residential properties for solar energy on the August 30 primary ballot this year.

“Increased use of free, homegrown solar energy just makes business sense, especially in a state with such abundant sunshine,” said Randy Miller, President and CEO of the Florida Retail Federation. “We commend Senator Brandes, Representative Rodrigues and Berman for championing a ballot amendment that will give Florida voters the chance to open the market to new solar opportunities and clear the way for retailers to further invest in Florida and in our energy future.”

”Providing businesses the opportunity to take advantage of tax fairness for solar development is a good thing,” said Julio Fuentes, President and CEO of the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “If approved by voters in August, this initiative will provide tax fairness and allow for further long term investment to the great state of Florida.”

“Tourism – the biggest industry in Florida – will benefit from the energy savings that reducing taxes will offer,” said Richard E. Turner, General Counsel and Vice President of Government Relations for the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “The power of the sun is one of the state’s greatest resources. It’s time we harness it to power our homes and businesses.”

If approved by voters, the initiative would move Florida closer to eliminating a significant tax barrier that is currently preventing many Florida businesses and other energy consumers from investing in solar.
