Jacksonville Business Journal: CSX Employee Named Top Environmentalist by Association of American Railroads

Friday, May 17, 2013

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) last night named CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX) employee Rick McNey the winner of its annual John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award for outstanding environmental awareness and responsibility.

“Rick and his team have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to environmental awareness, protection and conservation – setting an example for CSX and the entire freight rail industry,” said Skip Elliott, vice president – public safety, health and environment, CSX. “Getting the right results the right way is a core value at CSX and this prestigious award recognizes Rick’s tireless work to serve our customers while preserving environmental resources.”

McNey is manager of maintenance at the 150-acre Curtis Bay Pier in Baltimore, Md. McNey oversees all mobile and stationary equipment at the facility, which operates 24 hours a day, receiving, processing, and loading a variety of bulk products. Under his leadership, CSX reduced emissions and energy consumption at the pier and implemented strict environmental stewardship practices to further safeguard the sensitive watershed adjacent to the facility.

McNey and the local team of more than 100 people are also responsible for developing numerous mechanical enhancements that improved environmental efficiency at the facility. Successful projects led by McNey include installing a state-of-the-art geothermal cooling system which reduced energy use by 40 percent; reducing water consumption by 40 percent by harvesting rain water and snow melt; using energy efficient light emitting diode (LED) bulbs; improving the efficiency of the facility’s electrical network; and upgrading the pier’s dust mitigation system.

“Rick’s work to improve efficiency while protecting the environment is a credit to the entire railroad industry,” said Edward R. Hamberger, president and CEO, AAR. “We salute the dedication that he and his team consistently display to maintaining sustainable operations that improve the quality of life for the communities we serve.”

The annual Chafee Environmental Excellence Award is named for the late Rhode Island senator who devoted his career to protecting the environment. McNey is the sixth CSX employee to win this recognition.
