Sun Sentinel: Elimination of sales tax on manufacturing equipment could increase jobs

Friday, May 03, 2013

Florida’s legislature passed a bill this week that eliminates sales tax on the purchase of manufacturing machinery and equipment.

Gov. Rick Scott, who is expected to sign it, has been a strong advocate of the tax elimination, saying it will put Florida in a more competitive position with other states to draw manufacturing companies — and jobs.

Associated Industries of Florida applauded the passage: “Florida will now be among more than 40 states that do not subject their manufacturers to the extra burden of paying sales tax on manufacturing equipment and machinery,” said Tom Feeney, AIF president and chief executive.

Mark Wilson, president of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, said with the state poised to take advantage of the Panama Canal, lifting the manufacturing and equipment sales tax “will help ensure Florida is prepared to take full advantage of these new opportunities — to double Florida-orgin exports ….and create more high-skill, high-wage manufacturing jobs.”
