WFLA: Advocates pushing for Marsy’s Law in Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – Victims of crimes are pushing to pass Marsy’s Law in Florida.
Michael Liles spoke before the Florida Constitution Revision Commission on Tuesday in honor of his wife Deborah. She was murdered last year at their home in Jacksonville.
“The person who did it was previously a convicted felon. He has a record. He was on probation. The system failed completely,” said Liles.
The board will decide whether or not Marsy’s Law will go on the upcoming ballot. It’s meant to protect victims of crimes.
“I’ve been through eleven hearings so far. I have not been noticed by any of the state or court systems as to when these hearings are to be and it’s frustrating,” he said.
Connie Rose of St. Petersburg is also advocating for change.
She’s a survivor of sex trafficking. Her father was her pimp.
“The justice system sometimes doesn’t realize how they re-victimize and how they re-traumatize victims,” she said.
Governor Rick Scott and Florida lawmakers are joining advocates as they push to be heard.
Liles said they won’t stop until something is done.
“We want a say in what’s happening with the trial and the legal system as it pertains to our loved ones,” he said.
If approved, the amendment will go on the ballot for the 2018 General Election.
